I was trying to put together a fairly documented strait forward piece for submission to WIKIPEDIA. I had some thoughts of putting the EJS BIG BAND there. Then I began reading all the rules and just gave up……after I had produced what follows. Interesting to look back and see what we have accomplished. Most of the events I wanted to chronicle didnt even make this piece….good times….good music…good people!!!
The Etowah Jazz Society (EJS) is a Big Band formed in April of 2002 as a not for profit organization (501c3 organization) by a group of dedicated area musicians who love to perform a wide variety of big band music, from Jazz Standards to Broadway and Pop Hits. The name was chosen because of the Etowah River, which is a well-known local landmark that slowly meanders through the lovely valley and historical area. Society is defined as “people from the community.”
The EJS benefits the local music programs and provide college scholarships, tuition, and music funds for the local high schools. In addition, we supply educational opportunities to students of the area. This group has earned and donated to the community thru direct gifts and scholarship funding over $30,000.00 towards the advancement of Jazz and music. The group also created a Jazz Festival that ran for 2 years and brought the GMEA jazz band to Cartersville for master classes and a concert. The group has funded the musicians for the summer youth theater program for about 7 years. This band is regarded as a major contributor to the arts efforts and education in North Georgia.
The EJS is comprised of some 17 players from all walks of life who live in the local and surrounding communities. Among the many musicians that perform for EJS, you will find a Retired Surgeon, Accountant, HP Consultant, Physician, Cartersville High School Band Director, Retired Accountant, Marketing Executive, Middle School Teacher, Physical Therapist, High School Drama Teacher, Tech Manager, Retired School Administrator.
The EJS plays live at many events ranging from Concerts on the Square Downtown to Christmas Concerts along with weddings and other events all over North Georgia and the Atlanta area.
The EJS Big Band has produced 2 CD’s and have another in the post production phase.
The Title for the first CD “HEADWATERS” was an expression of the dedication of this band to bring the sound of big band jazz to the next generation. The EJS band is the “headwaters” from which this information will flow downstream to the next group of jazz fans. The first CD, “HEADWATERS”, was a “live” CD.
On the second CD “WHAT JAZZ IS THIS”, the group made a studio quality CD that displayed the tunes that the band performs on Christmas Concerts played during holiday seasons. This effort was a compilation of months of studio work (Christmas tunes in JULY!!!) and individual and sectional recordings. It was critically acclaimed as “…a spirited gathering of “folks with day jobs”…… plenty of enthusiasm; they also get a lot of sound out of their 20-piece big band………. the unison playing is quite polished, notably the horns on “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” and “Silent Night””, by The Davis Enterprise 12-16-2010.
